Tall ship Regata Varna -2014

In 2010 the city of Varna welcomed sailing boats participating in the Historical Seas Tall Ships Regatta, which became the event of the year for the city and attracted over 300 000 visitors.

Tall Ships Regatta was first held in the distant 1956. The organisers in Britain strongly believed in the idea that the maritime race will contribute to good relations and understanding between young people from different countries. Since then Tall Ships Regatta has become a tradition and is held every year, with sailing ships from all over Europe and other continents as well.

The Tall Ships Regatta in 2014 will be held entirely in the Black Sea, with the following host ports - Varna port (Bulgaria), Sochi and Novorossiysk (Russia) and Constanta (Romania). Sailing vessels of more than 30-foot water line length and a crew aged 16 to 75 can take part in the race. Patron of the festival days in Varna is Rosen Plevneliev, President of the Republic of Bulgaria and of those in Novorossiysk and Sochi -Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation. It is expected that the President of Romania Traian Băsescu will be a patron of the event in Constanta.

Over 40 guest sailing ships are expected to arrive in the sea capital between April 30th and May 3rd this year, 10 of which will be of the prestigious class A. During the three-day stay in the port of Varna the vessels will be open for the public. There will be a rich in-port programme - concerts, sports events, children’s attractions. Crew parade and award ceremony will be organised in the city centre of Varna. A Parade of Sails is scheduled for May 3rd, during which the participating sailing vessels will pass near Varna coast to show their grandeur and beauty.

Over 500 000 tourists are expected to arrive in Varna to witness the spectacular event.
